The Electrical Checklist to Make Before a Home Renovation

Electrical decisions are easier to make on a floor plan than after cabinets, tile and painted walls are finished.

A renovation changes more than the appearance of a room. It changes where you prepare food, place furniture, charge devices and use equipment. Bringing those routines into the electrical plan early helps the finished space work as well as it looks. Start with the room's purpose rather than a shopping list of fixtures.

Walk through an ordinary day

In a kitchen, picture preparation, cooking, cleanup and a quieter evening. In a bedroom, think about bedside access and furniture positions. In a home office, consider the actual desk location and equipment. Mark these activities on the layout. The electrical plan should respond to how the space will be used, including any accessibility needs you want considered.

Collect equipment specifications

Share appliance, ventilation, heating and other equipment details as selections become firm. A generic label such as “new oven” is less useful than the actual model. Changes late in the project can affect circuits and capacity planning. If an item has not been selected, make that uncertainty explicit so the scope can be revisited before installation.

Design lighting in layers

General light, task light and decorative fixtures do different jobs. Discuss work surfaces, shadows, switching locations and the atmosphere you want in the evening. Dimmers and fixtures need compatible specifications. For fans, include support, location and control choices in the electrical scope. See our lighting and ceiling fan service for common project types.

Identify work that belongs behind the walls

Moving a wall or changing a room's use can affect wiring routes and outlet placement. Discuss needed rewiring and dedicated circuits before the construction sequence is fixed. Ask how existing wiring will be evaluated and what conditions could change the proposal once the work area is accessible.

Put responsibilities on one page

  • Final equipment and fixture selections.
  • Electrical scope and any capacity review.
  • Permit and inspection responsibilities.
  • Access, protection of finishes and interruption planning.
  • Wall repair, painting and work by other trades.
  • How changes to the approved plan will be handled.

The exact inspection sequence depends on the work and local authority. Confirm it before covering work that needs inspection.

Bring related projects into the conversation

If EV charging, a heat pump or backup power is also planned, mention it even when it belongs to a later phase. Coordinated planning can identify dependencies without turning every future idea into today's scope. Send PDI Electric your town, renovation description, available layout and approximate project timing through the service request form.
