The kitchen needs clear light where you prepare food, the living room needs comfortable light after dinner, and an entry needs a welcoming, usable transition. Layer the light around the room
General lighting, focused task lighting and accent lighting do different jobs. Recessed lights alone may not illuminate a counter well if their placement casts shadows where you stand. A pendant can look right but need a different location once the dining table is in place. Share the room layout, working surfaces and furnishings before positions are finalized.
Plan controls with fixtures
Decide where you want to switch or dim each group. The route into a room and the way it is used matter as much as the fixture count. Lamps, drivers and controls need to be compatible; a dimmer is not automatically suitable for every light. Ceiling fans need more than a lighting outlet
Fan installation requires a review of support, wiring, clearance and the manufacturer's requirements. Replacing a light with a fan can therefore be a different project from exchanging one similar fixture for another. Provide the fan model, ceiling height and whether a fan or light already occupies the location.
Outdoor and entry lighting
For porches, paths, patios and garages, think about where light is useful and where it could create glare. Equipment must suit its environment. Discuss controls, mounting, access and the wiring route before selecting a fixture simply for its appearance. Explain whether the goal is a replacement, a new lighting location or broader exterior improvements.
Coordinate with finishes
New locations can require access through ceilings and walls. Identify what is open during a renovation and what must remain finished. Clarify electrical scope, cutting access and who handles patching or painting. A short room-by-room schedule of fixtures and controls can make decisions easier for everyone working on the project.
